Short on time? We understand. Check out this quick overview of our favorite baby monitors.

So, What Are Baby Monitors Exactly?

Also known as a baby alarm, a baby monitor, at its most basic, is a device that allows you to monitor your baby from another room.

There are two main types: Audio Monitors and Video Monitors.

Audio Baby Monitors

Audio monitors work through radio waves and generally come with two units - a transmitter unit, complete with a microphone to leave near baby, and a receiver unit to keep with you. Any sounds your baby makes are picked up by the transmitter unit and carried to your receiver via radio waves.

Many audio baby monitors allow back and forth communication and some even come with music.

These are often much more affordable than the latest wireless video models and they still get the job done. Any unusual sounds will be broadcast to your receiver, alerting you to the fact that "me-time" is officially over!

Video Baby Monitors

Video baby monitors have been around for a while and although they may be a bit pricier, we feel the additional peace of mind gained from being able see and hear your baby is well worth any additional cost. Traditional versions, similar to audio monitors, come with a transmitter unit (complete with camera), which is left with baby, and a receiver unit, on which you can view your baby's activities.

The latest WiFi versions offer a live video feed, streamed directly to your smartphone, tablet or computer through a downloaded app. Some even have motion sensor pads that can be placed under baby's mattress.

Baby Monitor Safety Tips

  • Beware of Hacking: Some WiFi baby monitors that send a live feed to your chosen internet-connected device are particularly vulnerable to hackers. Find out more about how to secure your WiFi baby monitor here.
  • Beware of False SIDS Claims: Many baby monitor manufacturers boldly claim to reduce the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) with little to no evidence to back up these claims. To learn more about SIDS and how to prevent it check out this page.
  • Beware of Radiation: Many people are becoming increasingly concerned about the levels of RF (radio frequency) radiation emitted by wireless baby monitors and the adverse effects this on babies.

So How Do Baby Monitors Work?

Analog

The most affordable option by far, analog baby monitors usually run off a frequency of 49mHZ or 900mHZ - a commonly used frequency - and may be prone to picking up static from nearby electronic devices running off the same frequency. To combat this problem, most analog baby monitors have several channels, so you can manually tune in to one with minimal interference. Still, the use of analog baby monitors in densely populated areas is bound to come with at least some level of interference, and you might inadvertently end up listening in on your neighbor's conversations - or vice versa!

Digital

Somewhat pricier, digital baby monitors usually run off a 2.4 GHz frequency with an encrypted signal to keep others from accidentally - or intentionally (it happens!) - listening in on you and your family. Unfortunately, this doesn't mean you won't experience any interference from electronic gadgets in your own home - cordless phones, microwaves and WiFi routers.

DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Technology)

Another digital baby monitor option, DECT monitors run off a 1.9 GHz frequency and are the least prone to interference. These are also the most expensive.

Do You Really Need a Baby Monitor?

Let's face it, having a baby can be expensive...

Apart from the 101 "must-have" baby essentials, you'll probably have an entirely separate list of "might-need" baby essentials and another list of "wish-I-had" baby essentials. Unless you don't mind filing for bankruptcy before the end of baby's first year, it's probably a good idea to try and stick to your "must-have" list as much as you can.

In our opinion, baby monitors are a "must have" essential.

Even if you co-sleep, there will be countless moments in your day when you'll need to leave baby to see to other tasks, and a baby monitor allows you to do this with the peace of mind that should your baby need you, you'll know about it instantly.

Baby monitors aren't just another one of many things you'll only be using for a couple of months, either. Even as your baby gets bigger, and eventually becomes a toddler, you'll continue to need (and want) to keep an eye on them - they'll still be your baby, after all! Finding the best baby monitor for your needs will help you do this.
