You never truly realize just how many things a baby needs until you take them for their first trip outside of the house.
A good baby bag (also known as a diaper bag) can make leaving the house with your baby (and everything that comes with them) just a little more - dare we say it? - organized.
While we can't promise a smooth, 100% fuss-free departure (remember those?), having the right baby bag can definitely put a tiny touch of joy back into being on the move with tinies in tow.
Top 5 Best Baby Diaper Bags
Short on time? We understand. Check out this quick overview of our favorite baby diapers.
Do you need a diaper bag?
Well, the answer to this is pretty obvious, but just incase you're completely new to life with a baby, allow us to fill you in:
The list of things you'll have to drag around with you once your munchkin arrives is potentially endless. There'll be bottles, separate feeds, diapers, change pads, wet wipes, blankets, a change of clothes, socks, shoes, teething rings, teething gels, toys (which you hope will keep them entertained, but somehow never do) - the list goes on and on.
And the real kicker?
It doesn't get any easier as they get bigger. In fact, your baby bag will probably be even more crammed once your baby is big enough to insist on bringing multiple stuffed animals along for the ride!
Choosing a durable, decent sized baby bag is essential if you want to avoid lugging around more than one.
Here's a slick video we liked that really drives home the main benefits of diaper bags.
What makes a good diaper bag?
While style comes down to personal preference (you might prefer a baby bag that closely resembles a handbag or, if your partner plans to use it too, something more androgynous might be a better choice), at the end of the day, functionality is a key consideration. Whatever your choice, your diaper bag shouldn't leave you crying over spilled milk or dealing with a mess caused by a missing diaper.
These are some of the qualities we look for in a good diaper bag:
Space
A diaper bag should be roomy enough to accommodate all of your baby's travel essentials and more. There's simply nothing more frustrating than not being able to fit a baby bottle into its designated pouch because your bag is too overloaded.
Also, take into consideration the fact that it might be easier to carry your belongings in the same bag too, because, really - who wants to be weighed down by 2 separate bags?
You'll have your hands full enough with your baby, as it is!
Compartments (aka pockets!)
Having multiple compartments is a must if you plan on staying organized (and staying organized is vital for quick access, ensuring your baby's happiness and your sanity!). Keeping things like pacifiers and teething rings in easy to access compartments comes in handy more often than you might imagine.
Durable and easy to clean
A good baby bag will likely become your new best friend, accompanying you on every outing. Just like your best friend, it should be able to handle a few tough times and shake off all sorts of mess without holding a grudge. There's no question that your baby bag will be exposed to a range of bodily fluids (spit up, poop, pee - hey, we don't ask questions, these things happen to the best of us), as well as food spills, so finding one that's easy to clean and quick to dry is good idea!
What are the different types of baby bags?
Gone are the days of having to choose between blindingly bright colors or offensively ugly designs. Most baby bags today are a mix of functionality and style and with so many options out there, you really don't need to sacrifice one for the other.
These are some of our favorite types for every need:
Messenger bags
These bags are a stylish option that both moms and dads can wear with pride. Also known as sling or satchel baby bags, they feature a single strap, designed to wear across the body and over one shoulder. Sleek and simple, keep in mind that messenger bags often are the largest (or the most feminine!).
Backpack bags
While these probably aren't the most fashionable option, they're well balanced and are great for parents with back problems. Our biggest gripe with backpack style baby bags is that, although most of them feature plenty of compartments, in our experience you're more likely to have to empty the whole bag in search of a single item and could end up stuffing everything back in, in a haphazard hurry - so much for staying organizedโฆ
Tote bags
If it's space you're after, tote baby bags are hard to beat. This is probably why these are one of the most popular types available - which mom wouldn't love to be able to fit in just one (or 2, ok maybe even 3!) more items into their diaper bag? When you have a baby, less is definitely not more and you can never be too prepared!
On the downside, these are undeniably more feminine than some varieties and some guys just won't be thrilled by having to lug a handbag about.
Designer bags
If you're a die-hard fashionista who simply cannot bear the thought of being seen out and about with anything less than the latest designer gear, take heart - there's a baby bag that's perfect for you, too! Well known designers are now producing a range of diaper bags, so there's no need to sacrifice high end fashion for functionality. We get it, you've given up a lot since becoming a mom and you deserve a treat! Just be warned: don't think for a moment that these bags have a smaller price tag attached because their made for baby gear - these can cost a pretty penny!
Love fashion but can't afford the high end goods? Cheaper fashion friendly bags (known as fashion diaper bags - what a surprise!) are also now on the market.
Too bad that with such a strong focus on fashion, mom-friendly functionality is often bypassed in favour of style.
Stroller bags
These are great for adding storage to strollers lacking in this department or if youโd like to use your strollerโs storage compartment for other items, such as shopping bags, but still need to carry your baby bag.
These are usually better suited to heavier strollers as a heavy diaper bag has the potential to tip a lightweight weight stroller over. If you often overstuff your diaper bag (we know we're guilty of this offense - and more often than weโd like to admit, too!) be sure to take extra care when using one of these.
Our Top Baby Diaper Bag Picks For 2018
Finally - a backpack diaper bag that's cute, too! Apart from looking better than most backpack options, this one has some really good features, as well. We especially like that can be wiped clean, has large storage capacity and plenty of pockets so that we can at least try to stay organized!

Cons
This option offers great value for money and is super stylish, too. With plenty of space, a change station, insulated bottle bag and the ability to be used as a stroller bag we're having a hard time finding anything not to like about it.

Waterproof, durable, roomy and easy to clean, we like that this affordable designer tote bag looks great and still has all the functionality a mom could ask for.

Pros
Cons
If you don't want to have to buy a separate bag for you and your partner, this backpack style diaper bag will switch seamlessly between men and women.
It comes with a decent amount of pockets for organizing odds and ends, has 3 insulated bottle compartments and can be attached to your stroller, too.

Our #1 Baby Diaper Bag Pick!
Why we love it:
Well, what's not to love? It looks great, has plenty of room and compartments, comes with a few extras and it's affordable.
The only fault we could find was with the straps - if they were just a tad bit wider theyโd be more comfortable. Otherwise, we love everything about this diaper bag that's loaded with features like:
- An extra purse for mom
- Insulated bottle bag
- Accessory cases
- Stroller attachments
- Matching changing station
- Plenty of room and compartments
Whichever baby bag you choose, always make sure all your baby's items (and don't forget yours, too!) will fit easily, without straining the seams or zippers.
Our advice? Go big, or stay home! ๐
