What makes a baby product so essential, anyway?
You likely have a mile long list already and if you don't know what you're looking for, shopping for baby essentials can end up costing you a lot more than it should.
For us, baby essentials are something new moms simply can't do without. Having to take care of a newborn is an exhausting job and you won't be getting any breaks.
Sometimes we could all use a little help...
In this article we take a look at some the most useful tools to help ease you into parenthood. To take some of the angst out of baby shopping, we've rounded up only the best baby essentials of 2017 - so you can focus on what really matters.
In no particular order, these are the best baby essentials we just can't do without:
Baby Monitors (2020)
Baby monitors can be a lifesaver when you need to get things done around the house, but you're worried about not being able to hear your baby should they need you. Having a baby monitor can save you having to make countless trips back and forth to baby's room - and will eliminate the possibility of accidentally disturbing your baby while checking up on them. With a baby monitor you're secure in the knowledge that you'll always be able to hear them the second they wake up.
When choosing a baby monitor, you'll have a few different options. Below are our favorite video and audio baby monitors. For an in depth look at the different types of baby monitors, check out this page.
Our favorite video and audio baby monitors of 2020
One of our favorite features on this baby monitor is the playback option. As parents, we've all found ourselves wishing we'd had a camera on hand so we could relive a moving moment or capture a surprise milestone. With features like motion sensors, a wide angle lense and night vision, you're unlikely to miss a single moment

As far as audio baby monitors go, this is a great option - and one of the most affordable ones, to boot! We love the talk-back feature and the long range (up to 1,000 ft. outdoors and 160 ft. indoors). Also very important is the security offered by the 2.4GHz frequency and although there might still be some interference from your household appliances, the Willcare Digital Audio Baby Monitor comes with a handy noise reduction microphone to help cancel out static.
Baby Carriers (2020)
All babies love being carried and some demand it, screaming bloody murder every time you even so much as think of putting them down. If you've been trying to figure out how you're going to get through the next year without the use of your hands, it's probably time to consider getting a baby carrier. Baby carriers are one of those genius inventions that make everyone happy - you get the use of your hands back (hallelujah!) and your baby still gets to be as close to you as they can get (yay!).
Baby carriers come in many shapes and styles, for a definitive baby carrier guide, visit this page.
These are our top picks of the best ergonomic and wrap baby carriers of 2017:
We love hassle - free products that keep on rewarding you and offer the most bang for your buck. This baby carrier does all that and more. It's suitable for newborns, (without needing to add an insert), offers 6 carrying positions, and can even be used for toddlers, so it's unlikely you'll ever need to buy another carrier.
This wrap has it all! We adore multi-purpose products, and this wrap delivers. Once you've had a little practice, you'll be wrapping like a pro and this ultra soft wrap carrier can be used as a postpartum belt, nursing cover and sling, too! If versatility is as important you as it is to us, the CuddleBug 4 in 1 baby wrap is an excellent choice.

Many bottles can lead to nipple confusion when combining breastfeeding with bottle feeding. We can't get enough of the Comotomo Baby Bottle’s unique and innovative design that seamlessly combines the natural feel of breastfeeding with the convenience of bottlefeeding. This silicone bottle even allows for a small squeeze at the start of a feed, simulating the natural let-down of breastmilk - absolute genius!
We're crazy about the adaptability of the Nuk baby bottle range - the option to buy one bottle and later adapt it to a training cup is an irresistible feature for many. Now with an improved, breastfed-baby-friendly nipple, Nuk bottles are even more appealing than ever before.
Baby Formula (2020)

This affordable powder formula is great for babies with sensitive tummies. Partially Hydrolyzed formulas are easier for babies to digest and Gerber Good Start has a blend of fatty acids, prebiotics and probiotics - essential compounds found in breastmilk. Baby Swings (2020)
Ah, the baby swing - would whoever invented them please stand up?We'd like to shake your hand - and then smother you with hugs and kisses.
Feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, pressed for time?
A good baby swing could be your new best friend. With the ability to soothe even the most savage of beasts and buy moms a few moments of peace and quiet, we definitely consider baby swings a baby essential.
There are some amazing baby swing options available. Go here if you're looking for more - and check out our baby swing safety tips while you're at it.
Our favorite full-size and portable baby swings:
Absolutely adorable and packed with features just for baby, this swing has serious soothing potential. Baby doesn’t like swinging side-to-side? Try head-to-toe. One of the only swings to offer this option, we can't help but get the impression that the Fisher-Price Snuggapuppy Swing really understands babies. Other features we love are the weight change detection, motorized mobile and - especially important for newborns - the fact that it has 2 reclining positions.
Finally, a portable swing with a comfortably padded seat! This swing goes the extra mile to ensure baby is as comfortable and happy as possible with a well padded seat, two reclining positions (important for newborns) and Whisper Quiet technology so that baby's swinging pleasure won't be distributed by a noisy motor. One of the best portable swing options, as far as we're concerned!
Baby Diapers (2020)
A quality diaper is essential. Choosing the wrong one could lead to painful rashes for baby and late night linen changes for you. Chemicals found in disposable diapers may even lead to severe allergic reactions in some babies.
Save yourself (and your baby) the pain in the butt of choosing the wrong diaper and check out our guide to the Best Baby Diapers.
These are our top disposable and cloth diaper picks of 2020:
Like all parents, we tend to gravitate towards the trusted, well known brands and, in our experience, this is one product that keeps its promises. Perfectly suited for newborns, this non-irritating fragrance free diaper is soft and breathable and has an umbilical cord cutout and a wetness indicator so you know when it's time for a change.
This product proves that cloth diapers don't have to be a drag. All you have to do is wash and wear. The fact that no folding or extra parts are required had us sold, but the one size fits all feature sealed the deal! If you're considering a cloth diaper, but find the whole idea a bit intimidating, Moomoo All in One Adjustables might just be the inspiration you need.
The Baby Bottom Line
Whether you buy them all or just pick one or two, remember that your little angel is unique and what works for some, might not be the best option for you.
Research can be helpful, but - as with most things in life - the best lessons are learned through trial and error.
Being a parent is tough, don't make it tougher by comparing yourself to others - and for heaven's sake, stop being so hard on yourself!
We're all just figuring it out as we go.
